Graphic design services will help you create your book cover. Your cover is the first thing readers will see when they pick up your book. While it’s true you can’t judge a book by its cover, it needs to grab readers’ attention and give them an idea what they can expect from the book.

While the exact requirements will vary by book type and your own interests and ideas, there are a few key features that our graphic design services can help with:

Front Cover

• Book title (and subtitle if you have one)
• Author(s) name(s)
• Photo(s) or graphic(s)

Spine

• Book title (and subtitle if you have one and there is room for it)
• Author(s) name(s)
• Fortress Books and Web logo (if you want to use it)

Back Cover

• Blurb to tell readers what your book is about
• ISBN if you are planning to sell your book (find out more about obtaining an ISBN here)
• Fortress Books and Web logo (if you want to use it)
• Photo(s) or graphic(s)
• Price (if you’re selling your book, not essential)
• Website – either your own author website, your own book website (find out how to set up your own website here), or Fortress Books and Web (find out how to get your book on our website here) (not essential)

Other key points

• The whole cover will need a bleed and margin to ensure no important text or images are cut off
• The cover (front, back and spine) are created in a single document and printed on a single sheet
• All photos on your cover need to be 300 DPI resolution and CMYK colour scheme. We recommend Adobe Photoshop to recolour and resize your photos for the best quality, however free services such as online converters are available. We recommend Adobe InDesign for best quality when making your cover, but free services and other programs are also available
• You can use an online barcode generator to create your ISBN barcode
